Pediatric Care at North Oaks

During Your Child’s Stay

To ensure you and your child’s safety and comfort when you stay with us, we have set some safety-focused guidelines.

Cribs Are Required

For your child’s safety and protection, cribs are required for children, 2 years of age and younger. Please keep the side rails raised at all times except when having direct contact with your child.

Adult Accompaniment Required

A parent or adult over 18 years of age is required to stay at all times with a child younger than 14 years of age.

No Bottles While Lying Flat

For safety, please do not allow your child to take a bottle lying flat in the crib.

Safe Toys

Please ask your nurse which toys are safe for your child to play with during his or her hospital stay.

Hospital-Provided Amenities

Hospital gowns, prepared baby food, diapers and bottle formula are provided by the hospital. No glass bottles are used. A complimentary meal tray is provided for one adult staying with a child 14 years of age or younger. Meal times are about 7:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Entertainment

A telephone, TV and DVD player are available in each room.

Hourly Nurse Check-Ins

We will make hourly rounds during daytime hours to ensure safety, security and comfort. Beginning at 10 p.m., the staff will round every two hours to evaluate your child’s progress. Please tell your nurse if your child experiences vomiting, diarrhea, a fever or a change in his or her breathing.

No Siblings Under 18

For the safety of our patients and visitors, siblings under the age of 18 may not spend the night. Please ask the staff about availability of recliners or cots for your sleeping comfort.

Chaplains Available

Chaplains are available to meet with patients, families and guests.

You are provided a full copy of the guidelines during your child's admission to the Pediatric Unit and are asked to sign an acknowledgement that you have read them.

Going Home: The Discharge Process
Once your pediatrician approves your child’s discharge, we will complete several steps so that you will have everything you need to care for your child at home. Your nurse will review your chart, verify all medication and treatment orders from your pediatrician, obtain authorization for certain medications if necessary and obtain any necessary equipment for home use (nebulizers, monitors, etc.). This process may take two to three hours to complete. Your nurse will keep you updated throughout the discharge process, but if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
