North Oaks Sports Medicine Student-Athletes of the Month for March Announced

North Oaks Sports Medicine and North Oaks Physician Group’s orthopaedic surgeons have selected LiNeshon “Lala” Legard and Reed Roberts of Hammond High Magnet School, Jessica Nesom of Doyle High School in Livingston and Britt Harris of Springfield High School as “Student-Athletes of the Month” for March 2016.

LiNeshon “Lala” Legard is a 17-year-old junior with a 3.5 GPA at Hammond High Magnet School. She has been a member of the track and field team for 3 years. In her first meet of the season, Legard had three first place finishes and a second place finish. Before her second meet was cut short due to inclement weather, she placed second in the triple jump.

Legard is recognized as a leader on and off the field. She also plays basketball and softball, and is enrolled in the medical magnet program’s sports medicine classes. Head Track Coach Cecil Thomas notes, “She is an excellent student and has made a positive impact on the culture at Hammond High Magnet.”

She is the daughter of Shirell and Lionel Legard.

Reed Roberts, a 17-year-old junior at Hammond High Magnet School, has a 4.0 GPA and has played on the baseball team for 3 years as a catcher. At a recent baseball tournament in New Orleans, Roberts hit a grand slam. He also plays football.

“Reed is every coach, athletic trainer, and teachers’ dream,” states Head Boys Baseball Coach Stephen Ceravalo. “He is a dedicated individual, who goes above and beyond, never settling for less than 100 percent." Ceravalo admires Roberts for not allowing his diabetes to slow him down.

He is the son of Southeastern Louisiana University’s Head Football Coach Ron Roberts and his wife DiDi. He has been inducted into the National Honor Society and, like Legard, is enrolled in the medical magnet program’s sports medicine classes.

Jessica Nesom, 16, is a junior member of the girls’ basketball team at Doyle High School in Livingston. The daughter of James and Melissa Nesom, she has a 3.78 GPA and was nominated by Bradley Watts, the school’s athletic director. She averages 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists per game.

Head Basketball Coach Samantha White admires Nesom as one who “leads by example,” noting how hard she worked this past season to overcome an ankle injury. “She was at practice every day to help her teammates however she could. She worked hard in rehab and put in extra work after practice once she was cleared.”

Nesom also is a 2-year member of the Doyle High School Track team, as well as the Beta Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Sixteen-year-old junior Britt Harris attends Springfield High School, where he has a 3.3 GPA and has played baseball for 3 years as second baseman. On average, he bats 3.3.250, earns an on-base percentage of .400 and collects 4 RBIs. He earned All-District Honorable Mention recognition in his sophomore year.

Head Baseball Coach John Pace admires how Harris “strives to help his teammates excel on and off the field,” noting that he tutors his fellow students in math.

Harris is involved in the youth group at Bethlehem First Baptist Church of Albany. He also is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and helps coach little league T-ball. He is the son of Springfield High School Principal Spencer Harris and his wife Tammy.

From September 2015 to April 2016, North Oaks Sports Medicine staff and North Oaks Physician Group orthopaedic surgeons will choose male and female Student-Athletes of the Month from both Tangipahoa and Livingston Parishes. Honorees must: have a 3.0 GPA or higher; excel in athletics; participate in school and community organizations; and respect coaches, teammates, officials, teachers and their peers. In May 2016, male and female “Student-Athletes of the Year” will be selected from all the monthly honorees for both parishes.
