What Men Should Ask the Urologist About Prostate Health

So you have a urology appointment coming up. Be prepared with a list of questions to make your visit smoothly. Whether you’re seeing your urologist for a regular check-up or because you have a problem, asking questions can help you both plan for a healthy future.

Here are some suggestions:

• When do I need a prostate exam? Your urologist will ask about family history and other risk factors to determine when the time is right for you. It’s helpful to gather information about your family’s medical history prior to your appointment to have a more informed conversation.

• What is an enlarged prostate? Commonly referred to as BPH, it is a non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland. As it gets bigger, it begins to block urine flow.

• What are the symptoms of an enlarged prostate? Symptoms vary in every man and tend to gradually worsen over time. And, the size of a prostate does not necessarily determine the severity of the symptoms.

• How is an enlarged prostate diagnosed? Your urologist will ask you detailed questions about the symptoms you might be experiencing and perform a physical exam and screenings like a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test or digital rectal exam (DRE).

• How many times a day should I be urinating? The average person heads for the bathroom 4-8 times per day. If you think you’re urinating more than usual, keep track of how often you are going and tell your doctor. He or she may test you for a urinary tract infection, depending on your symptoms. If you have trouble urinating, it could the sign of an enlarged prostate.

• What should I be eating? Talk with your urologist about what foods are best for your sexual health, healthy urination, to prevent kidney stones and to help prevent an enlarged prostate.
