The
American College of Surgeons (ACS) has reverified
North Oaks Medical Center as a
Level II Trauma Center through February 2022 following an intense on-site evaluation earlier
this year.
North Oaks Medical Center first earned ACS verification as a Level II Trauma
Center in 2016. ACS conducts a reverification survey every three years.
Since becoming a trauma center in 2016, North Oaks has cared for nearly
5,000 trauma patients according to Trauma Program Manager Tyler Brignac.
“This achievement recognizes our team’s dedication to providing
optimal care to injured patients,” affirms
Trauma Program Medical Director Marquinn Duke, MD, FACS. “From pre-hospital and emergency room care to surgical intervention,
recovery and rehabilitation, we offer a wide spectrum of resources, care
and expertise to address the needs of trauma patients. We are prepared
for the unexpected when seconds count.”
Level II Trauma Centers must demonstrate the ability to initiate immediate,
lifesaving care for all injured patients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
At North Oaks, trauma/critical care surgeons and specially trained nursing
teams are available in-house 24/7 to treat trauma cases, including, but
not limited to: falls, motor vehicle crashes and sports injuries. Emergency
medicine physicians, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists,
ophthalmologists, radiologists and ear, nose and throat surgeons also
provide coverage.
The hospital is the only Level II Trauma Center serving Region 9, which
is comprised of Tangipahoa, Livingston, St. Helena, St. Tammany and Washington
parishes, and one of seven designated trauma centers in Louisiana (two
Level I centers, four Level II centers and a Level III center).
Established by the ACS in 1987, the Committee on Trauma’s Consultation/Verification
Program for Hospitals validates that trauma centers meet the essential
criteria of capability and performance as outlined in its
Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient manual.
