Trauma Program
Manager Tyler Brignac was recently recognized by
The Daily Star
as a “Future 40 Under 40” professional to watch.
Brignac joined North Oaks Health System as Trauma Performance Improvement/Outreach
Coordinator in April 2015. He was promoted to North Oaks Trauma Program
Manager in May 2016. In this capacity, he is directly responsible for
the administration of North Oaks Medical Center’s verified Level
II Trauma Center.
Education and community outreach are an important part of the trauma program.
Sudden Impact is an education program that targets teen drivers to help
prevent fatalities and injuries from impaired, distracted and/or unrestrained
driving. Under Brignac's guidance, North Oaks Medical Center partners
with the Louisiana State Police, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission,
University Medical Center, Louisiana State Troopers Foundation and others
to offer this important program to local high schools.
Brignac is very passionate about helping to train first responders and
members of the public to help save lives. No matter how rapid the arrival
of professional emergency responders, bystanders are often first on the
scene. A person who has suffered a trauma and is bleeding can die from
blood loss within 5 minutes; therefore, it is important to quickly stop
the blood loss. Utilizing the teaching tools and resources of the national
“Stop the Bleed” program, Brignac and his team are in demand
conducting trainings on the proper methods for applying tourniquets and
packing wounds to help give trauma victims a fighting chance and buy time
to transport them to a hospital to receive treatment.
Brignac also is involved in the planning of North Oaks’ annual “Play
it Safe” event, which is entering its fifth year and provides sports,
home and vehicle safety information to more than 500 children and their
families through games, demonstrations and other interactive activities.
He helps orchestrate an annual Trauma Symposium, which is now entering
its third year and provides continuing education to physicians, nurses
and first responders on treating trauma patients. Topics have included:
obstetrics trauma, boating safety, brain hemorrhages and pelvic trauma.
Participation from an average of nearly 200 attendees annually is overwhelmingly positive.
As the hospital’s liaison to the
Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency, Brignac is an integral part of the team that plans our annual flag ceremony
held to recognize donors and their loved ones, as well as the dedication
and commitment of our
Emergency Services,
Surgical Services, Shock Trauma, and Medical and Surgical Intensive Care Unit teams. He
also helps to orchestrate a butterfly release to honor the silent hero
donors and their families and helps to promote organ donation across the
community through presentations at civic organizations and through media
appearances.
