Dr. Felix Torres of North Oaks Primary Care Clinic in Livingston has found
a way to stay in shape—even after suffering a knee injury that developed
into painful arthritis.
He simply does what he can. Since his injury, Dr. Torres has found riding
a bike difficult and running uncomfortable; however, long walks several
times a week keep him healthy and motivated. “I am a distance walker,”
he explains. “But if walking for 30 or 45 minutes is not an option
for you, try walking 10 minutes 3 or 4 times per day. It’s just
as effective.”
Dr. Torres also shares that if pain is an obstacle to exercise, supports
and braces can be used to stabilize joints and make physical activity
possible. Knee braces, ankle supports or even elbow and wrist braces may
help. “Walking on elliptical exercise machines or swimming also
are options,” he continues. “Not everyone may have access
to these forms of exercise, but everyone should find a way to exercise—even
if it’s through a hobby.”

Dr. Torres shares his top three personal strategies to help inspire your
wellness goals.
Exercise.
A vigorous work out will help your heart pump better and make you feel
and look better. If you suffer from knee or back pain, three brisk 10-minute
walks are just as effective as a longer workout.
Refuel with Snacks.
Low-fat milk products, graham crackers, apples or celery sticks with peanut
butter or raisins are a few healthy choices.
Balance work, home and play.
Take time to relax and get 7-9 hours of sleep at night.
