So, when it's time to "get your eyes checked," you will want
to see the right eye care professional to meet your needs. Although each
plays an important role in your eye care, the levels of training and expertise
are different for these providers.
What is Ophthalmology?
Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine dealing with the anatomy, physiology
and disease of the eye. An ophthalmologist is a doctor of medicine who
specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the eye. Since
ophthalmologists perform operations on eyes, they are considered to be
both surgical and medical specialists.
Our ophthalmologist, Daniel J. Dodson, MD, specializes in small incision
cataract surgery to promote faster healing and better results. He also
has broad experience with lens implants.
Dr. Dodson provides patients of all ages an array of care, including:
- Eyelid surgery
- Tearing
- Glaucoma
- Age Related Macular Degeneration
- Cataract assessment and surgery with intraocular lens implantation
- Laser surgery.
What is Optometry?
Optometry is the health care profession concerned with examining the eye
for defects and faults of refraction, with prescribing corrective lenses
or eye exercises, with diagnosing diseases of the eye and with treating
such diseases or referring them for treatment. An optometrist is not a
medical doctor, but receives a doctor of optometry (OD) degree after completing
four years of optometry school, preceded by three or more years of college.
From performing annual eye exams for adults and children of all ages to
prescribing eyewear and medications, optometrist Addie Smith, OD, offers
complete vision care to her patients. Her areas of expertise include:
- Contact lens and specialty fits, such as Rigid Gas Premeable, scleral and
multifocal.
-
Custom sport tinted lenses.
- Diagnosis, management and therapeutic treatment of ocular diseases, including,
but not limited to diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and eye infections
- Pediatric eye care for infants and beyond.
In addition to the services provided by Dr. Dodson and Dr. Smith, our certified
opticians are trained to design, verify and fit eyeglass lenses and frames,
contact lenses and other devices to correct eyesight. Whether you need
your first pair of eyeglasses or contacts, a new prescription or the latest
fashion in sunglasses, they can help you find the right choice from our
clinic's large selection.
North Oaks Eye Care Clinic has the hottest trends in
