North Oaks Sports Medicine athletic trainers teamed up with
North Oaks Physician Group orthopaedic surgeons to select Wayne Dowdy, Bre’Ashlee Jones, Sarah Novak and Justin
Thompson as Student-Athletes of the Month for February.
Wayne Dowdy is a junior at Hammond High Magnet School. He is a midfield
soccer player and belongs to Key Club and Student Government. Wayne also
is a member of the youth group at First Presbyterian Church of Hammond
and achieved a score of 31 on his ACT. The 17-year-old maintains a 3.9 GPA.
“As a midfield player, he doesn’t have much of a chance for
goals, but he’s amazing at creating space and possession. Upon entering
a game, he once created a goal opportunity within 5 seconds,” shares
Michael Bowling, a teacher at Hammond High Magnet School.
He is the son of Charles and Bethany Dowdy.

Bre’Ashlee Jones, 16, is a junior guard on the Jewel Sumner High
School basketball team in Kentwood with a 3.8 GPA. She stands out with
393 points, 115 assists, 192 rebounds, 67 steals and 26 blocks in one
season. Also a cheerleader and member of the cross country and track teams,
she belongs to the Honor Choir, and Beta Club, as well as Family, Career
and Community Leaders of America.
“Bre’Ashlee is a leader in the classroom. She pushes herself
and others to succeed. During breaks at school, she tutors other students,“
affirms her basketball coach Karen Corken. “She is very involved
in her church as well.”
Bre’Ashlee is the daughter of Seletha Brandon.

Sarah Novak is an 18-year-old junior powerlifter for Walker High School,
who placed first in the American Federation of Powerlifting’s regional
and national championships. Novak maintains a 3.0 GPA.
“She won state her freshman year, placed highly last year and has
improved constantly on her maxes,” affirms Certified Athletic Trainer
Nathan Borget. “She is a great team leader inside and outside of
the weight room.”
She is the daughter of Eugene and Anna Novak.

Justin Thompson, 17, is a junior starter for the basketball team at Albany
High School. He is involved in Beta Club and the youth group at Old Zion
Hill Church and also referees bitty games through the Albany Youth Association.
“Justin is a 4.0 student and a leader on and off the court,”
observes Boys Head Basketball Coach Christopher Carter.
Justin is the son of Mark and Sharmon Thompson.

From August to April, North Oaks Sports Medicine staff and North Oaks Physician
Group orthopaedic surgeons will choose a male and a female student-athlete
from both Tangipahoa and Livingston Parishes as “Student-Athletes
of the Month.” Nominations are accepted from coaches, athletic directors
and principals. Athletes must:
- excel in athletic competition
- have a 3.0 grade point average or higher
- participate in school/community organizations
- respect coaches, teammates, officials, teachers and their peers.
In May, North Oaks Sports Medicine staff will select a “Student-Athlete
of the Year” from all monthly honorees.
