North Oaks Sports Medicine certified athletic trainers have joined North Oaks Physician Group orthopaedic surgeons to select Caleb Cleveland, Camryn Flanagan, Brittney Turner and Drew Thompson as the 2017 “Student-Athletes of the Spring Season” in Tangipahoa and Livingston parishes.

Female and male students were chosen from both parishes, representing the months of February-April 2017.

Camryn Flanagan is a senior with a 4.0 GPA at St. Thomas Aquinas Regional Catholic High School in Hammond and a two-time North Oaks Sports Medicine Student-Athlete honoree. She was first recognized in February 2016.

Flanagan is pictured, from left, with North Oaks Sports Medicine Head Athletic Trainer/Supervisor Nate Borget, St. Thomas Aquinas Head Softball Coach Jamie Flanagan and North Oaks Athletic Trainer Jeremy Kulbeth.

Flanagan has belonged to the indoor and outdoor track teams for three years. This year, she placed eighth in the 200-meter relay at Louisiana State University (LSU); sixth in the 200-meter relay, twentieth in the 55-meter relay and twenty-fifth in the long jump at McNeese State University; as well as twenty-fifth in the long jump and fortieth in the 60-meter relay out of a field of 90 contenders at the LSU Last Chance Qualifier meet.

Flanagan also has played softball for the Lady Falcons for four years and has signed with the Southeastern Louisiana University Lady Lions softball team. She is the current state and national leader in stolen bases at 42, has a .489 batting average, has scored 44 runs and has an on-base percentage of .590.

“Camryn has completed over 200 service hours in the local community and maintains a high GPA, while participating in sports and many other extracurricular activities,” affirms Head Softball Coach Jamie Flanagan. “She truly exemplifies what all students should strive to be through hard work, public service and a positive attitude.”

As a student ambassador, Flanagan represents St. Thomas to prospective students and their families. She also belongs to the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Student Council, Light Team and yearbook staff.

She is the daughter of Jamie Flanagan and Jodi Martrain.

Caleb Cleveland is an Oak Forest Academy junior with a 4.0 GPA. He has played second base for the Yellow Jacket’s baseball team for three years with a batting average of .373 and an on-base percentage of .512. Recently, he went 7/8 in a doubleheader against Hillcrest.

Cleveland is pictured, from left, with North Oaks Sports Medicine Athletic Trainer Matthew Rabalais, Oak Forest Academy Head Baseball Coach Tony Salim and North Oaks Sports Medicine Head Athletic Trainer/Supervisor Nate Borget.

“Positive attitude and a great work ethic make Caleb a great leader on and off the field,” comments Head Baseball Coach Tony Salim. “He’s a respectful young man who works hard for his team and himself.”

Cleveland belongs to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Beta Club.

He is the son of Cabot and Teena Cleveland.

Brittney Turner is a freshman at Albany High School with a 4.0 GPA. She is a pitcher and infielder for the Lady Hornets softball team. In 33 games played, she has earned a .353 batting average for 85 at-bats. Her on-base percentage is .481 with two home runs.

Turner is pictured, from left, with North Oaks Sports Medicine Head Athletic Trainer/Supervisor Nate Borget and Albany High School Head Softball Coach John Legoria.

Head Softball Coach John Legoria reflects, “As a freshman, Brittney has shown great poise in the pitching circle and has pulled through some tough situations.”

Brittney is active in Beta Club and the school’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America chapter. She also belongs to Eagle Heights Church in Hammond.

She is the daughter of Bobby and Marie Turner.

Drew Thompson is a freshman member of the Albany High School cross country and track and field teams. He is the son of Jason Thompson and Darla Greco.

Thompson is pictured, from left, with North Oaks Sports Medicine Head Athletic Trainer/Supervisor Nate Borget and Thomas Law, head coach for the cross country and track and field teams at Albany High School.

“Drew is a well-developed runner and the strongest freshman distance runner on the team,” shares Coach Thomas Law. “He works hard at practice and is a great example to students around him.”

The distance-runner stand-out recently ran an 18:52 three-mile at the Livingston Parish Cross Country Championships. During the track and field season, Thompson distinguished himself by breaking five minutes in the one-mile with a time of 4:58.7 and breaking eleven minutes in the two-mile with a time of 10:56.2.

He maintains a 4.0 GPA and belongs to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He attends church at The Well in Ponchatoula.

Principals, coaches and athletic directors from high schools in Tangipahoa and Livingston parishes nominate student-athletes. Candidates must: have a 3.0 GPA or higher, excel in athletic competition, participate in school and community organizations and have earned the respect of coaches, teammates, officials, teachers and their peers. In May, the North Oaks Sports Medicine team will choose a “Student-Athlete of the Year” from all season honorees.

Nomination forms are available online or can be requested by calling North Oaks Sports Medicine at (985) 230-5248.

North Oaks Health System is one of Louisiana's largest and most progressive community hospital organizations and is strategically based between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. For nearly 60 years, we have made it our mission to improve lives, every time and with every touch. Facilities in Tangipahoa and Livingston parishes include an acute care hospital, a rehabilitation hospital, two outpatient diagnostic & treatment centers, an outpatient surgery center, two outpatient rehabilitation clinics, a hospice agency and a growing physician group for primary and specialty care.
